About this campground

Nestled in the serene north end of the Laramie River Valley, Stub Creek Cabin beckons adventurers seeking an authentic mountain retreat. This thoughtfully appointed facility seamlessly blends modern comforts with rustic charm, offering a gateway to pristine wilderness where time slows down. Whether you're casting a line in crystal-clear waters, tracking wildlife through ancient forests, or simply breathing in the crisp mountain air, this secluded haven promises an unforgettable escape from the everyday world.
Stub Creek Cabin is a unique accommodation offering lodge-style facilities amidst a natural setting.
Historical SignificanceStep through the door of this 1936 treasure and feel the echoes of America's conservation legacy. Built by the industrious hands of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the New Deal era, these sturdy walls once sheltered generations of Forest Service rangers who dedicated their lives to protecting this wilderness. Each weathered beam tells a story of resilience and stewardship, connecting today's visitors to nearly a century of mountain guardianship and the enduring spirit of those who first called these peaks home.
Weather and SeasonsSummer transforms this high-country paradise into a hiker's dream, with June through September delivering sun-drenched days perfect for exploration under brilliantly blue skies. Winter wraps the landscape in a gentle blanket of snow, creating a wonderland of solitude where snowflakes drift lazily through towering pines. The mountain climate keeps temperatures refreshingly cool even in peak season, while autumn paints the valley in golden aspens and crisp, star-filled nights that seem close enough to touch.
ElevationPerched at a breathtaking 8,400 feet, where eagles soar at eye level and the world stretches endlessly below, Stub Creek Cabin offers a true high-altitude experience. The thin mountain air carries the scent of pine and possibility, though visitors should pace themselves as they acclimate to this lofty perch. From here, panoramic vistas unfold in every direction, revealing the raw beauty of the Rockies in all their glory.
Natural Features and SceneryAncient spruce, fir, and lodgepole pines stand as silent sentinels around the cabin, their branches whispering secrets of the wilderness. The melodic babble of Stub Creek provides a natural soundtrack to your stay, its clear waters dancing over smooth stones just steps from your door. This pristine ecosystem serves as a living stage where majestic moose browse in meadows, elk bugle at dawn, deer bound through dappled sunlight, and the occasional bear reminds visitors they're guests in a wild kingdom that remains beautifully untamed.
Geological RegionCradled within the magnificent embrace of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, where the Rockies meet the sky at 8,400 feet, this mountain sanctuary occupies a special place in Colorado's crown jewels. The surrounding landscape tells an ancient geological story written in granite peaks and glacial valleys, while the nearby Pawnee National Grassland offers a striking contrast of ecosystems. Here, where Stub Creek has carved its patient path through millennia, towering evergreens create natural cathedral spaces that inspire wonder and reflection in equal measure.
