About this campground

Nestled within the sprawling Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, Hog Island Youth Group Camp offers an authentic wilderness experience designed exclusively for organized youth groups. This tent-only sanctuary welcomes up to 50 young adventurers at a time, providing the perfect backdrop for building lifelong memories. The camp has earned glowing reviews for its tranquil atmosphere, where the sounds of nature replace the buzz of daily life. Miles of hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest, while the nearby Withlacoochee River beckons with opportunities for paddling adventures and fishing expeditions.
This campground is exclusively designed for youth groups and primitive tent camping. It cannot accommodate RV camping or glamping options.
Historical SignificanceThe lifeblood of this region, the Withlacoochee River, begins its 70-mile journey in the mysterious Green Swamp before winding its way to the Gulf of Mexico. Its name, meaning 'crooked river' in the language of the indigenous peoples who first knew these lands, perfectly captures the meandering nature of this waterway. Today, the area stands as a testament to Florida's commitment to preserving its most precious natural habitats, offering visitors a glimpse into the wild beauty that has captivated explorers for centuries.
Weather and SeasonsExperience Florida's most comfortable camping weather from November through February, when crisp, dry days create ideal conditions for outdoor exploration. As spring arrives in April, the landscape transforms with warming temperatures and increasing humidity that continues through September. Summer brings dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that refresh the forest and fill the air with the earthy scent of rain-soaked pine needles—a quintessential Florida camping experience.
ElevationThe campground rests gently upon Florida's characteristic low-lying terrain, where subtle changes in elevation create diverse ecosystems throughout the forest.
Natural Features and SceneryStep into a landscape where towering pine sand hills give way to mysterious dense woodlands, all connected by trails that form natural tunnels beneath the forest canopy. The crown jewel of the area is the Withlacoochee River itself, designated as an Outstanding Florida Water for its exceptional ecological significance. Here, morning mist rises from the dark waters while ancient trees lean over the banks, creating perfect frames for unforgettable photographs and moments of quiet reflection.
Geological RegionHog Island Youth Group Camp sits at the heart of the Croom Tract's diverse ecosystem, where the ancient sand hills meet the life-giving Withlacoochee River. This remarkable landscape showcases Florida's botanical diversity with majestic slash and longleaf pines reaching skyward, while pond and bald cypress trees stand sentinel in the wetter areas. The forest floor tells stories through its varied cast of characters—stately southern magnolias perfume the air, hickories provide shade and sustenance for wildlife, and numerous oak species create a multi-layered canopy that shelters countless creatures and creates an ever-changing play of light and shadow throughout the day.
