About this campground

Tucked away in Montana's pristine wilderness, Fox Creek Cabin beckons adventurers seeking an authentic backcountry experience. This charming former ranger station, accessible only by foot, ski, or snowshoe, rewards the journey with unparalleled solitude and a genuine connection to nature. Here, modern distractions fade away as you embrace the simple pleasures of a wood-burning stove, lantern light, and the symphony of the surrounding forest.
Fox Creek Cabin is a primitive lodging facility ideal for small groups of up to two people. It does not support traditional RV or tent camping.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at this authentic piece of Forest Service history. Once home to backcountry rangers who patrolled these rugged mountains on horseback, Fox Creek Cabin stands as a testament to the early days of forest conservation. The weathered logs and simple construction tell stories of dedicated men and women who lived and worked in these remote outposts, protecting the wilderness for future generations to enjoy.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings gentle warmth to this mountain sanctuary, with wildflowers painting the meadows and occasional afternoon thunderstorms rolling through the peaks. As autumn arrives, crisp mornings give way to golden afternoons perfect for hiking. Winter transforms the landscape into a snow-covered wonderland, where cross-country skiers and snowshoers carve their paths through pristine powder. Spring awakens the forest with rushing creeks and emerging wildlife, though muddy trails and persistent snowpack at higher elevations can present challenges. Pack your bug spray for the warmer months when flies join the wilderness experience.
ElevationPerched at 6,700 feet in the heart of the Gallatin Mountain Range, Fox Creek Cabin offers a true high-country experience. At this elevation, the air is crisp and clear, the stars shine brilliantly in the thin atmosphere, and every breath connects you to the alpine environment. The altitude provides cooler temperatures even in summer and ensures plenty of snow for winter recreation.
Natural Features and SceneryFrom your doorstep at Fox Creek Cabin, a wilderness wonderland unfolds. Dense stands of Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, and Engelmann spruce create a living cathedral around the small clearing where the cabin rests. South Cottonwood Creek babbles nearby, its crystal-clear waters providing a soothing soundtrack and refreshing respite. In summer, vibrant wildflower meadows burst with Indian paintbrush, lupine, and bear grass, while the imposing silhouette of Mount Blackmore towers at 10,154 feet, dominating the eastern skyline. This is prime wildlife habitat where lucky visitors might spot grizzly or black bears foraging in berry patches, hear the haunting howl of gray wolves at dusk, or catch a glimpse of elusive mountain lions. Elk bugle in autumn meadows, moose browse in willow thickets, and bighorn sheep navigate rocky outcrops. The rare Canada lynx pads silently through the forest, while overhead, golden eagles soar and mountain bluebirds flash their brilliant plumage.
Geological RegionDeep within the Gallatin Mountain Range of the Custer Gallatin National Forest, Fox Creek Cabin occupies a special niche at 6,700 feet elevation. This geological wonderland showcases the raw power of ancient mountain-building forces, with dramatic peaks, deep valleys, and exposed rock faces telling a story millions of years in the making. The cabin's clearing beside South Cottonwood Creek offers an intimate glimpse into this grand landscape, where thick evergreen forests cloak the mountainsides and pristine streams carve their way through ancient bedrock, creating the perfect basecamp for exploring one of Montana's most spectacular mountain ranges.
