About this campground

Step back in time at Mystic Lake Cabin, a treasured backcountry retreat that has welcomed adventurers since 1930. Perched at 6,400 feet in the heart of the wilderness, this rustic hideaway rewards those willing to journey by foot, ski, or horseback with an authentic mountain experience. Here, where modern conveniences fade away, you'll discover a simpler rhythm of life alongside pristine fishing waters, prime hunting grounds, and miles of multi-use trails that wind through untouched landscapes.
Mystic Lake Cabin provides cabin accommodation in a remote setting accessible only by non-motorized travel. The cabin is equipped for up to four guests and offers a rustic camping experience.
Historical SignificanceFor over nine decades, Mystic Lake Cabin has stood as a testament to the craftsmanship and vision of 1930s wilderness architecture. This weathered sanctuary has sheltered countless adventurers seeking passage into the wild heart of the Gallatin Range. Its hand-hewn logs and time-worn floors whisper stories of hunters, anglers, and explorers who've passed through its doors, making it not just a shelter, but a living piece of Montana's outdoor heritage.
Weather and SeasonsMother Nature paints each season with a distinct palette at Mystic Lake. Crystal-clear skies grace the area about half the year, creating perfect conditions for stargazing and sunny trail adventures. Winter transforms the landscape into a snow-dusted wonderland, with moderate snowfall blanketing the forests and meadows. Summer arrives with warm, inviting days ideal for exploration, though mountain weather can shift quickly—bringing afternoon thunderstorms that refresh the wildflowers and fill the air with the scent of rain on pine.
ElevationAt 6,400 feet above sea level, Mystic Lake Cabin offers a true alpine experience where the air is crisp and thin, and the views stretch endlessly across mountain ridges. This elevation brings refreshingly cool temperatures even on summer's warmest days, though visitors should pace themselves as they adjust to the altitude. From this lofty perch, you'll witness spectacular sunrises painting the peaks gold and evening alpenglow that transforms the landscape into a photographer's dream.
Natural Features and SceneryNestled within a tapestry of towering pines and sun-dappled meadows, the cabin sits like a secret waiting to be discovered. Summer brings an explosion of wildflowers—Indian paintbrush, lupine, and mountain asters—that carpet the meadows in vibrant hues. The jewel of the area, Mystic Lake itself, mirrors the sky and surrounding peaks in its pristine waters. This is prime wildlife territory where black bears and grizzlies roam ancient paths, moose browse in marshy meadows, and elk bugle across the valleys. Lucky visitors might spot a bald eagle soaring overhead or catch sight of mule deer threading through the forest shadows.
Geological RegionThe Gallatin Range cradles Mystic Lake Cabin in a landscape sculpted by ancient glaciers and volcanic forces. Jagged peaks rise dramatically from verdant valleys, creating a diverse ecosystem where evergreen forests give way to alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers. This geological wonderland showcases Montana's raw beauty—from weathered granite faces to hidden cirques, and from rushing mountain streams to the serene waters of Mystic Lake itself. It's a place where the earth's powerful history is written in stone and experienced with every step along the trail.
