About this campground

Escape to the edge of the wilderness at Starrigavan Campsites, where the ancient rainforest meets the sea just 7 miles north of historic Sitka. This diverse recreation area welcomes adventurers with an array of camping experiences—from convenient roadside sites perfect for RVs and families, to secluded group gathering spots, and remote hike-in sanctuaries for those seeking true solitude. Here, the rhythm of tides mingles with the whisper of wind through towering trees, creating a backdrop for unforgettable outdoor memories.
The campground accommodates a diverse range of camping types, including individual tent sites, group tent areas, RV spaces, and cabins.
Historical SignificanceStep back through centuries of human history at the nearby Old Sitka State Historic Site, where the stories of Tlingit culture and Russian colonial encounters come alive. This sacred ground offers more than just camping—it's a gateway to understanding the rich tapestry of cultures that have called this coastline home, from ancient indigenous communities to the Russian settlers who established their first permanent settlement here in 1799.
Weather and SeasonsEmbrace the authentic Southeast Alaska experience where gentle mists nurture the lush rainforest canopy. Summer brings nature's air conditioning, with refreshing temperatures hovering between 52°F and 60°F, accompanied by the soft patter of rain that keeps the forest vibrantly green. The frequent showers are simply part of the rainforest's charm—pack your rain gear and discover how magical the forest becomes when kissed by moisture. Winter transforms the landscape into a quieter wonderland, though snow and ice may occasionally limit access to this coastal paradise.
ElevationPerched at the meeting point of forest and ocean, the campground rests at sea level where the tides dictate the daily rhythm and the salt air mingles with the earthy scent of the rainforest floor.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in one of North America's last great temperate rainforests, where massive Sitka spruce and western hemlock create a towering green cathedral overhead. Beneath their protective canopy, vibrant salmonberry bushes offer seasonal treats while emerald mosses carpet every surface in nature's velvet. The pristine waters of Starrigavan Bay and Creek form a dynamic estuary system, where salmon return each year and sea otters play in the kelp beds just offshore.
Geological RegionThis coastal gem showcases the magnificent temperate rainforest ecosystem of the Starrigavan Recreation Area in all its glory. Ancient Sitka spruce and western hemlock giants stretch skyward, their branches draped in moss like nature's own tinsel. Below, a lush understory of salmonberry, devil's club, and ferns creates multiple layers of green, while cushiony moss blankets fallen logs and forest floor alike, creating a landscape that feels both primordial and perpetually renewed by the maritime climate.
