About this campground

Perched high in the Sierra Nevada, Van Vleck Bunkhouse beckons adventurers seeking an authentic mountain retreat. This year-round sanctuary transforms with the seasons: summer visitors wind their way up mountain roads to discover this rustic gem, while winter transforms the journey into an exhilarating 6-mile backcountry expedition on skis or snowshoes. From its weathered wooden walls, gaze across 40 acres of pristine meadow that once echoed with the lowing of cattle. As the sole survivor of the historic Van Vleck Ranch, this bunkhouse stands as a testament to Sierra Nevada's ranching heritage, offering modern explorers a chance to sleep where cowboys once rested after long days on the range.
Van Vleck Bunkhouse provides a cabin-style lodging experience. Unlike traditional campgrounds with tent or RV sites, this facility focuses on rustic cabin accommodations.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time to 1957, when skilled hands raised the walls of this mountain bunkhouse on the sprawling Van Vleck Ranch. For over a century, from the 1860s through the 1960s, this land echoed with the daily rhythms of ranch life—cattle drives across mountain meadows, cowboys gathering around evening fires, and the enduring spirit of the American West. Today, this carefully preserved bunkhouse stands as the last witness to those bygone days, inviting visitors to become part of its continuing story.
Weather and SeasonsSummer unfolds with gentle mountain breezes and warm sunshine, making the bunkhouse easily accessible via scenic mountain roads perfect for family adventures. When winter cloaks the Sierra in its dramatic white mantle, Van Vleck transforms into a backcountry paradise where only those with intermediate to advanced winter skills dare venture. The 6-mile journey through snow-laden forests and crystalline meadows rewards the intrepid with an exclusive alpine experience few will ever witness.
ElevationAt 6,000 feet above sea level, Van Vleck Bunkhouse offers a front-row seat to nature's grandest theater. Here, where the air grows crisp and pine trees give way to hardy alpine species, sweeping vistas of the majestic Crystal Range unfold before you. This elevated perch places you firmly in the realm of mountain peaks and endless skies, where each sunrise paints the surrounding summits in shades of gold and rose.
Natural Features and SceneryNestled halfway up a Sierra Nevada peak, the bunkhouse serves as your gateway to a landscape of stunning contrasts. The melodic waters of Cheese Camp Creek wind through the property, while stands of quaking aspen create a shimmering green canopy in summer and a golden spectacle come fall. The expansive Milkhouse Meadow stretches before you, a natural amphitheater framed by the dramatic peaks of the Crystal Range. At 6,000 feet, every view is a postcard, every trail an invitation to explore this pristine mountain wilderness.
Geological RegionVan Vleck Bunkhouse occupies a privileged position halfway up a distinctive Sierra Nevada peak, where ancient geological forces have sculpted a landscape of extraordinary beauty. The surrounding Crystal Range showcases the raw power of granite formations thrust skyward over millions of years, while Cheese Camp Creek has patiently carved its course through the mountainside, creating the perfect high-altitude haven for those seeking to immerse themselves in the Sierra's timeless grandeur.
